New York Magazine recently reported the discovery of a whole new breed of urban hipsters, which they have dubbed "Grups," short for grown-ups. Also known as yupsters, the article describes a burgeoning community of thirty somethings who's tastes trend closer to those of collge freshmen than to those of "normal" adults.
While it remains to be seen whether there really is a grup phenomenon exerting unknown influence on the fabric of society, it is fascinating to think of the collapse of the generation gap as youth and their parents share the same interests, preoccupations and cultural points of reference. What does it mean to be a teenager if your expectations and interests are totally in line with your parents? What is the rebellion of youth when your parents share your disdain for the establishment and "square" lifestyles and worldviews?
